I haven’t read this book in about 20 years but I’ve been reading it this week to the children at bed time. It was strange how it felt so familiar and yet I’d forgotten some parts. I remember watching the Anjelica Huston film adaptation too: I don’t think my little ones are ready for that yet…
This is a book that has stood the test of time. Anya got a bit too scared of the witches but Matthew impressed me by being braver than usual (!) (Anya joined in again once Rosie the fairy took her worry away…)
The story revolves around a little boy who goes to live with his grandmother and she tells him about witches, REAL witches. On holiday they have the misfortune to be staying at the same hotel where the Grand High Witch is holding her annual meeting and the little boy’s life is changed forever.
This book is great fun but also deliciously scary. A classic.
