A young man is found dead but his family have rejected him. DI Gus McGuire is determined to show respect and care for the dead man through finding justice for his killer.
Unjust Bias is the 8th police procedural novel to feature Gus and his team. It is the first book that I have read by this author and the police characters are already firmly established. However, I feel that it works as a stand alone book.
Some chapters are written from first person perspectives which suggest a killer and victim’s viewpoints. The majority is written in the third person to show the police investigation and an undercover group with a mission. There is an unpleasant and dark tone to the book as it involves the dark web.
The issues surrounding the death are hinted at during the first third of the book before becoming explored further and more overtly. Conversion therapy and cruel attitudes to non conformity to sexual and gender stereotypes are handled in a sensitive way but are upsetting and shocking.
Gus is a good lead detective. He genuinely cares about justice for all and is determined to catch the killer. His emotional softer side is evident as he cares for the victims as well as in his personal relationships with family and colleagues.
Unjust Bias is an enjoyable police procedural novel and I would like to catch up on the earlier books.

Author Bio –
Born in Scotland, Made in Bradford sums up Liz Mistry’s life. Over thirty years ago she moved from a small village in West Lothian to Yorkshire to get her teaching degree. Once here, Liz fell in love with three things; curries, the rich cultural diversity of the city … and her Indian husband (not necessarily in this order). Now thirty years, three children, two cats and a huge extended family later, Liz uses her experiences of living and working in the inner city to flavour her writing. Struggling with severe clinical depression and anxiety for a large number of years, Liz often includes mental health themes in her writing.
